Cape in Qatar Projects Magazine

Throughout the intervening years it has expanded and evolved, and today it is universally recognised as one of the most innovative, professional and cost-effective organisations in the industry, serving primarily plant operators in the oil and gas sector, petrochemical, power generation, mining and mineral resources companies, and major engineering and construction contractors.

Cape first moved into the Qatar market in 1995, winning a prestigious insulation contract with Qatar Liquefied Natural Gas Company (QATARGAS) in Ras Laffan. In fact, a surge in demand for insulation and heat resistant products in Qatar made it a very attractive market for Cape, and after the award of this first project the opportunities in the region grew substantially, largely thanks to the growth and expansion of the oil, gas, LNG and petrochemical industries.

Providing maintenance services to 60% of the market in Qatar, Cape’s portfolio includes expertise in common access systems, insulation, refractory, painting, coatings, blasting, industrial cleaning, training and assessment: all skills and services that are required on an ongoing basis throughout the lifecycle of downstream energy infrastructure assets, from the construction of new facilities; the maintenance, inspection, turnaround and expansion of existing facilities; and onto the decommissioning and abandonment of retired facilities. Whatever the challenge, Cape’s clients choose it for its experience and expertise, especially on refurbishment and shutdown facilities.

Quality Projects, Quality Performance

At the present time, Cape is working with a number of clients, providing multi-discipline services on what will be the world’s largest Gas to Liquid Plant (GTL) – the Pearl project with Shell. This is at Ras Laffan, where Cape has a team of approximately 500 personnel on-site, with its range of services incorporating:

  • Utilities and offsite package with Descon, providing insulation and painting.
  • C 5 package with Sung Chang (sub-contractor to Hyundai), performing insulation work.
  • Air separation unit package with Gama, working on scaffolding and painting.
  • Process package with Consolidated Contractors Group (CCC), providing refractory andfireproofing.
  • Tank package with CBI, performing scaffolding and insulation works.

Cape is in the completion stages of refractory works on Al-Khaleej Gas Phase-2 (AKG 2) and Rasgas Train 7 for CCC. Similarly, for QATARGAS, the company is completing refractory works for Naseer Al Hajri on the Sulphur project.

In addition to this, Cape is working at Ras Girtas Power and Desalination Plant and Dolphin Condensate Tanks at Ras Laffan.

Cape is also working at the Ras Abu Fontas A1 Desalination Plant with Fisia, providing scaffolding and insulation; the Mesaieed Power Plant with Iberdrola, providing scaffolding and insulation; multi-discipline services (including refractory maintenance, insulation and scaffolding) at the Qatalum – one of the largest aluminium plants ever launched – for Solio; insulation and scaffolding at QCHEM 2 for Daewoo; and insulation, scaffolding and fireproofing works on the Qafco Melamine project for QCON.

Finally, Cape has successfully completed a major insulation contract on the Las Raffan Olefin project for Watar Water & Power Company.

Taking Care of Employees, Caring for Communities

With over 14,500 employees in 28 countries delivering safe, reliable and intelligent solutions, both on and offshore, Cape consistently employs world-class systems and processes across the entire business. Moreover, in every region where it operates – the UK, Middle East, CIS, Mediterranean & North Africa, Far East and the Pacific Rim – Cape takes care to build a reputation as a long-term investor in the local economy. It nurtures the skills of local managers and ensures that its operations are firmly embedded in local culture.

The company takes care of its people too: safety is a way of life at Cape. No matter how hazardous the environments in which it operates, Cape believes that every accident is preventable. Indeed, its ultimate goal is zero accidents and injuries. This safety first culture means that the company regularly receives awards and certifications from its clients for its excellent performance and commitment to safety.

In addition to ensuring a safe workplace, Cape recognises that its people are its greatest asset, with their health and welfare being a major priority. With this in mind, the company provides extensive health screening and runs programmes across all of its operational businesses in order to tackle the most common health issues relevant to the industry. In the Middle East and Far East, where many of its employees live in accommodation provided by the company, Cape has adopted the social accountability standard SA8000, and regularly audits accommodation facilities to make sure they meet this standard.

A Pioneering Company

The strength of Cape’s systems and processes is critical to its business performance.

Everywhere the company operates, its reputation for total reliability and on-time delivery is underpinned by a robust set of systems, and the quality of those systems is tried and tested according to international standards. In addition to the ISO 36 Qatar Projects Issue 15 9001 quality standard, Cape’s accreditations include ISO 14001 (environmental) and OSHAS 18001 (health and safety).

Cape is a company committed to continually introducing new construction and maintenance services, and has pioneered the development of a multi-discipline ‘bundled services’ capability, aimed at serving client needs more efficiently and competitively. The concept is designed to eliminate contractor interface problems by providing subcontracting services from a single source.

Cape’s broad range of expertise allows it to offer high quality, costeffective solutions for a wide range of challenges, each carefully tailored to the needs of each individual project. To learn more about Cape, visit www.capeplc.com.
